Greetings...
Up for auction is an absolutely GORGEOUS 2000 Gibson '61 SG/LP reissue in really nice faded cherry, with aged hardware, and the long maestro vibrola. Technically, original SG/LP's had the sideways vibrato, but Gibson calls this guitar an SG/LP reissue... go figure :- /
Gibson did an ENORMOUS job making this particular guitar look and feel like a "closet classic"... the finish is faded to a brownish/reddish color and the nickel hardware has a beautifully aged patina to it. Gibson did not do any finish checking on this guitar, so it has the appearance of an old SG thats been sitting under someones bed for a long time... all in all, a very authentic job of making the guitar appear like a vintage, yet super clean SG.
There is very little sense of playing a guitar made in 2000 with this guitar... it really feels and looks like a vintage guitar, without the vintage problems or price.
The finish (which I believe is nitrocellulose--it sure looks and feels like it) is a thing of beauty... a real nicely faded, thin finish that immediately feels comfortable and, well, vintage!!
Overall, the guitar is in very clean, 100% factory stock condition. It has a minor ding or two from regular use, but nothing that looks out of place on a guitar designed to look 45 years old, and nothing that a camera would even pick up. If it WAS 45 years old, I would call it near mint.
It has no playability or sound issues whatsoever, and no perceptible fretwear.
The pickups read nice, strong and balanced on my Fluke 179 meter: the neck is a sweet and warm 7.68k and the bridge is a ballsy, barky 8.08k, and both carry the "Patent Applied For" sticker that Gibson used on these reissue PAF pickups.
The neck width at the nut is 1.7", and 2.25" at the 22nd fret. Of course, the neck has that great wide flat feel that SG's are coveted for.
The guitar was just restrung with Ernie Ball 9's, and intonated perfectly on my Peterson strobe. This SG plays like an absolute dream with LOW action and no fret-out or string buzz.
The Custom Shop case, truss rod wrench, case key and all the case papers are included. The Custom Shop Historic certificate is NOT original to this guitar... Gibson didnt have them in 2000. I happened to get a blank certificate, and filled it out to match this guitar. It looks cool, and is just a nice piece to have, and really, this guitar deserves to have one!! Its an EXTREMELY cool SG!!
As far as the faded cherry/ aged hardware finished SG's go, this is the very best one I've ever seen, bar none. I recently got a white SG/LP that is the sister guitar to this one... I LOVE white guitars, and since I had to decide between one or the other, this one is for auction.
If I hadn't bought the white one, there is NO WAY I'd be selling this one... I've had it since it was new, and its too hard to find them this nice.
