1 of 400 Gibson USA SG '61 Reissue in Classic White

So this 1 of 400 special run began her life as a Gibson "Guitar of the Week" back in 2008:

Week 26 - SG '61 Reissue Classic White

In 1961, the traditional Les Paul Standard received a makeover that included a thinner body with sharply pointed double cutaways and, eventually, a new name—the SG. Today's reissue comes in a gleaming Classic White finish and features the small pickguard and nickel-plated hardware of the original '61.

That's right, just 1 of 400 ever made. I purchased it used in flawless condition from a studio guitar player who had already performed hundreds of dollars of upgrades on it.  Here is a summary of what he had done:

"A short time after the purchase, I took the instrument to my trusted luthier Ron Pace at Pace Guitar repair (www.paceguitarrepair.com). I had him perform some custom work and tweaking to bring this already great guitar up to pro standards. The pick ups were replaced with a Seymour Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge and a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates in the neck. The bridge and tail stop were replaced with a higher quality Tone Pros locking system with an aluminum tail stop. A coil tap switch for both pick ups was installed at the neck tone control (push-pull, activates both at the same time). Also the neck volume pot had a slight ditch in it, so that was replaced as well. The nut was re cut and lubricated as not to bind as SG’s tend to do. Also, the back of the neck was slightly "scuffed" to reduce friction. And finally, Shaller strap locks were installed. Ron (approved Gibson repairman) also did a complete Gibson approved multi point set up which among other things included neck adjustments and intonation. Everything turned out just awesome. This guitar is a silky smooth, lighting fast, fire breathing, rock and roll machine. Ready for the stage or recording studio. All of the work that a pro would do to a new stock guitar has now been done to this guitar in grand fashion. "

EXTRA CUSTOM FEATURES:

  • Tone Pros T1ZSA-C Lightweight Aluminum Tailpiece - $100

  • Tone Pros TP6-C Tune-O-Matic Bridge - $65

  • Seymour Duncan Custom Custom @ Bridge - $80

  • Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates @ Neck - $95

  • Shaller Strap Locks - $16

  • Push-pull tap at bridge tone control - $100 - THIS IS A VERY USEFUL FEATURE - basically, you pull up on the tone knob and your humbuckers become virtually single coil for that Fender Strat sound!  It's like two guitars in one.

  • Completely, professionally adjusted and set up - $75

Ok, so that covers what he did to this beauty before I got it.

Upon receiving it, I decided to take it one step further and fully customize a lot of the color accents and make it a true one-of-a-kind SG.

As you saw in the Gibson link to the SG page and can now see in the pictures in this auction, I have completely customized the look of this SG.  I went for a more classic, antique look.  Here's the breakdown:

  • Custom made white pickguard - '61 size

  • Custom made white plastic above neck pickup

  • Custom made white electronics back cover in '61 size

    • These three had to be custom ordered as Gibson simply does not make/offer them as standalone items!

  • Gibson brand cream colored pickup covers

  • Gibson gold-colored top hat volume and tone knobs

  • I will include the original black pickguard and black pickup covers.

Surprisingly, just those little changes really make a huge difference in the look of this guitar.  Every single time I gig with it I get compliments on it.  Every time.  In addition to the custom look I gave the guitar, I also took it to my own luthier and had him put new volume pots for more range and had him set it up completely for .11s.  Intonation and all.  This included installing a new nut.  What you are getting here is essentially an already awesome guitar from the factory with EVERYTHING you could possibly want done to it, already done!

As for the condition, I would say it is in GOOD condition.  I wouldn't call it excellent as I've been gigging with for a year straight in local bars and pubs and collateral damage is inevitable.  I've managed to give it a good bit of buckle rash on the back and what I call "button scratches" from my shirts.  These are dark lines that aren't really into the paint...they are like surface marks that with enough buffing come off.  There are a few dings and dents that I've tried my best to demonstrate in the pictures.  Some worse than others.  Any questions, please ask.  I can email hi-res phots upon request or you can also click on teh thumbnails below for hosted hi-res pictures.

All in all, there's close to $3K invested in this gorgeous guitar.  As to the guitar and how it plays.  One word, WOW.  I guarantee you will not be disappointed with how this thing plays and sounds.  Some people will say the guitar doesn't make the player but this is one that will definitely help out.  With the upgarded pickups it does full on metal to sweet blues and jazz using the coil tap feature.  As a cover band guitarist I can't tell you how convenient the coil tapping feature is.  It really is like having two guitars in one...without fumbling with crappy modeling amps!

I hate to let her go, but the band has slowed down quite a bit (might actually break up soon) and I can't justify keeping too many guitars.  Maybe one day, she'll end up back with me.  Good luck to all!
