Very HOT 1996 GIBSON SG-1
"one of the GREATEST Rock Guitars every made by GIBSON"
These guitars (the SG-1 and later, the SG-X) were popular guitars in the 1990's. The SG-1 was actually introduced in the 1970's, but the 1990's models were not really a reissue. One of the biggest differences is that GIBSON used its scalding hot "Super Ceramic 500T Bridge Bucker in these 1990's SGs. Next to the Dirty Fingers bucker, the 500T is the hottest pickup that GIBSON makes approaching 14K. " If it's no-holds-barred, in-your-face hard rock licks you want, look no further than the Gibson 500T. The powerful multi-ceramic magnet structure enables this monster to cover lots of territory. It can scream or growl - never losing its rich combination of enhanced lows and crystal clear highs."
The 500T is the perfect choice for a single humbucker to power a rock & roll guitar. However, GIBSON takes its design one step further by providing a coil-tapping option that allows you to use this 500T in a single-coil format. Note the small toggle switch between the volume and tone controls that controls the coil-tapping option. So basically, you can play this guitar as a heavy humbucker SG that will shake walls, or you can select the "more defined" single coil option. This option provides a wide range of rock tones for a single-pickup guitar.
Although this guitar has played its share of gigs in its 16 years, it is in very good condition for a 16 year-old guitar.
Pictures 1 & 2 show the front of the body which is in good condition with a few minor blemishes. Note the condition of the nickel hardware. Features a single volume and tone control, which offers a very wide range of tones. Toggle switch provides for single coil option.
Picture 3 shows the front of the headstock with the Roman Numeral I standing for SG-1. Note the brushed silver Sperzel tuners, a significant upgrade ***
Picture 4 shows the pack of the headstock shows a few unique features. 1) You can see the back of the "locking Sperzel tuners". I cannot tell you how great these tuners are. Set the string length how you want it, and then lock it in place............very simple to use and very effective holding strings in tune. 2) Like many black guitars, the serial number is difficult to read. The serial number is: 93036637. 3) Note the American flag at the base of the headstock. There was a time that this guitar was known as "the American SG". Also, note there are no breaks where the headstock meets the neck.
Picture 6 shows the fingerboard, again in good condition for a 16 year-old guitar. Limited fret wear and plenty of life still ahead of this guitar. One point I want to emphasize is that this is one of the few GIBSON guitars that has 24 frets up to high E. This provides access to those screaming high notes.
Pictures 7 and 8 show the critical area.....the back of the neck. Very good condition with only minor wear. This neck is very smooth and very fast. Also, note that there are absolutely no breaks or cracks of any kind, important for a guitar of this age.
Picture 9 shows the back of the guitar...........good condition with only minor wear. No significant buckle rash or worming.
Pictures 10 and 11 show the amazing case the comes with this SG......a Freestyle Case made in England. Very heavy duty. Please note that there are some sections where the outer tolex has torn off the case..........but this just adds to the vintage mojo of this guitar.
In preparation for this listing, the guitar has had the following: 1) Fretboard has been cleaned and conditioned with instrument grade lemon oil. 2) Frets have been cleaned and polished. 3) Body and headstock has been conditioned and gloss polished with high grade wood polish. 4) Bridge has been set up for intonation and playability. 5) Guitar has been restrung with a new set of Ernie Ball Slinkys (10 - 46).
