Vintage 1972
Gibson USA SG II
One owner Vintage 1972 Gibson USA SG II, Serial Number 757538, with the original case. I bought this guitar new in 1973. The Guitar Dater Project on-line dates it to 1970, 71 or 72, so I’m guessing it is a 1972 model. (http://www.guitardaterproject.org/gibson.aspx)
Over the years, I had some upgrades performed on the guitar, including:
Tuning machines: The original Gibson Deluxe tuning machines were upgraded to Schallers sometime in the late 70’s. Professionally installed at the old Park Music in Minneapolis. The original Gibson Deluxe tuners are included.
Bridge: The original wrap-around bridge was upgraded to a Schaller high mass bridge with fine tuning adjustments and individual saddles for proper intonation, also sometime in the late 70’s and also professionally installed by Park Music. The original wrap-around bridge and posts are included.
Pickups: The original wimpy pickups were replaced with genuine Gibson USA ’57 Classic Humbuckers (neck and bridge) in the late 90’s. Professionally installed by Brookdale Music in Naperville. I probably tossed the originals long ago, or else I never got them back when the work was done.
Truss Rod Cover: Original Gibson single-ply bell shaped truss rod cover was upgraded to a genuine Gibson three ply Les Paul cover three or four years ago. The original truss rod cover is included.
Pick Guard: Original single-ply Gibson pickguard was upgraded to a genuine Gibson Les Paul three-ply pickguard three or four years ago. The original pickguard is included.
Can you say MOJO? This one has it. It proudly wears its age, and looks killer. The original Cherry color has aged and worn to a beautiful warm brownish red - the pictures just don't do it justice. There are a few scratches, dings and buckle rash from its 40 years of life, but it all just adds to the vintage MOJO of this wonderful guitar.
The 22 fret neck is straight and true, with plenty of adjustment left on the truss rod. The frets show modest signs of use, most prominently on the first three or four frets. It has never had a fret job, so there is plenty of life left in them, and the guitar plays like a dream.
The tone this guitar creates is pure heaven. I never really played it back in the day because the factory soap-bar mini-humbuckers sounded anemic. The Gibson ’57 Classics really brought it to life.
I really hate to let this one go. I have had over 40 guitars since I bought this one, mostly Fenders, and most of them have been sold off over the past couple of years. I kept my SG for sentimental reasons – this baby was my first real electric guitar.
